IFFHS AWARDS – THE WORLD’S BEST CLUB COACH 2013 : JUPP HEYNCKES (GERMANY/FC BAYERN MÜNCHEN)
PRESENTATION
Josef “Jupp” Heynckes, born 9 May 1945 in Moenchengladbach, is one of the most famous German players, becoming also Manager with the same success ! He won in 2013 the IFFHS Award of THE WORLD’S BEST CLUB COACH after his fantastic treble with the FC Bayern München .
As player, Heynckes began his career in 1964 with his hometown Borussia Moenchengladbach. He spent there 12 of his 15 career years and won the UEFA Cup (1974/75), 4 Bundesliga Champion titles (1970/71, 1974/75, 1975/76, 1976/77) and one DFB Cup (1972/73), playing 369 matches in the Bundesliga and scoring 220 goals in the 15 years. He lost the Final of the European Cup-UEFA Champions League against FC Liverpool in 1977 with his club. He was Bundesliga Top Goal Scorer 1973/74 and 1974/75, European Top Goal Scorer 4 times in all UEFA Competitions between 1972 and 1976 !
He was also member of the West Germany National Team that won the FIFA World Cup 1974 and the UEFA European Championship 1972, playing 39 matches and scoring 14 goals.
As manager, Jupp Heynckes began his career at 34, always in his hometown Moenchengladbach ! From 1979 to 1987, he took in charge his heart club before joining FC Bayern München in 1987 for 4 years. He won there 2 Bundesliga titles (1988/89, 1989/90) and 2 DFL Supercups (1987, 1990) and decided to sign in Spain at Atletic Bilbao for two years in 1992. He changed again to Eintracht Frankfurt (1994/95) and Tenerife (1995-97) before becoming the coach of Real Madrid CF in 1997. He spent one season there and won the UEFA Champions League 1997/98 and the Supercopa de Espana 1997 ! Direction Portugal and Benfica (1999-2000), Spain and Atletic Bilbao again (2001-2003) where he continued to let play attractive football.
He came back to Germany in 2003 and joined FC Schalke 04, where he won the UEFA Intertoto Cups 2003 ad 2004. One season in Moenchengladbach (2006-2007), six months caretaker role at FC Bayern (2009) and two years at Bayer Leverkusen (2009-2011) : those were the stations before signing again two seasons at FC Bayern München (2011 to 2013). He won one Bundesliga title (2012/13), one DFB Cup (2012/13), one DFB Supercup (2012) and especially one UEFA Champions League crown (2012/13), his second after Real Madrid in 1997/98. He was also runner-up in the UEFA Champions League final 2011/12, losing against FC Chelsea in the München Arena Stadion. This year 2013 was the greatest year of his career, he was crowned FIFA World Coach of the Year, IFFHS World’s Best Club Coach and UEFA European Coach of the year. He stopped his career at the highest level in 2013, before coming back in 2017/18 for one season at the FC Bayern with a new Bundesliga title. He ended definitively his career after this last title.
