Fabulous weekend for Cameroon football.
Football fans in Cameroon have been counting their blessings following a weekend with much to celebrate, collectively and individually.
Amongst the high points were, firstly, the qualification of Coton Sport of Garoua for the semifinals of the CAF Confederations Cup following their 1-2 defeat away at the hands of Jaraaf of Senegal. The Cameroonians who had won the first leg match in Garoua 1-0 thus qualify to play against Egyptian side, Pyramids FC on June 20. Cotonsport. last reached this phase seven years ago before being eliminated by another Egyptian side, Al Ahly.
Celebrations time also when the fans who have been following the performances of players of the national team ahead of next year’s African Cup of Nations in Cameroon gleefully greeted the league successes of Cameroon captain, Eric Choupo Moting who has just won the Bundesliga crown with Bayern Munich, a few days after striker, Vincent Aboubaker did same with Turkish side, Besiktas JK.
To crown it all, CAF Deputy Secretary General, Anthony Baffoe, heading a binary CAF/FIFA inspection team has expressed satisfaction with the state of preparedness of the stadia and hotel facilities in Garoua, as well as progress made at the Olembe sports complex. The country had been grappling with the challenges posed by infrastructural demands ahead of the 33rd African Cup of Nations.
