European champions with club and country in same year
In 1964, legendary Spain midfielder Luis Suarez became the first footballer to win major European tournaments in the same year, both at the club level (with Inter) and at the national team level.
Currently, there are nine such players in the entire history. Considering only those who played in the victorious Champions’ League (Champions’ Cup) finals and shortly thereafter also in the victorious European Cup (European Championship) finals.
Three more players can be mentioned as well who also won with their clubs and national teams the major tournaments in the same year, but did not take part in the final match of one or both tournaments:
Wim Kieft (1988, PSV, Netherlands),
Nicolas Anelka (2000, Real Madrid, France),
Christian Karembeu (2000, Real Madrid, France).
It is also worth mentioning that in the entire history of the European Championships, there was only one case when the Champions’ Cup (or League) was won by a club of the country that won the Euro in the same year (1988, PSV, Netherlands).
