IFFHS - 11/07/2021 - EURO 2020 STATISTICS - FINAL
*Euro 2020 final became the second European Championship final decided via a penalty shootout, after the 1976 edition.
*It was the third major tournament (Euro and World Cup) final held at Wembley Stadium. All three were played with extra-times, but this time the winner was decided only in shootouts unlike two previous cases (England vs Germany in the 1966 World Cup, and Germany vs Czech Republic in Euro 1996).
*It was third consecutive case when a team playing a final game of Euro on home soil lost the final, after Portugal in 2004 and France in 2016.
*Of the 15 knockout matches played at Euro 2020, 8 have gone to extra-time. This equals the record at major tournaments: 8 at the 1990 and 2014 World Cups.
*Giorgio Chiellini (Italy) became the oldest player to start a final game at the Euro as captain (36 years 331 days) overtaking Gianluigi Buffon in 2012 (34 years 154 days).
*Italy won its 2nd European Championship trophy after 53 years from their first one (1968): the largest gap for a single team in the history of the competition.
*Italy became third team to win 2 penalty shootouts in a single major tournament (World Cup or Euro), after Croatia in World Cup 2018 and Argentina in World Cup 1990.
*Four players of England have lost the finals of Champions’ League and Euro at same year: Walker, Stones, Sterling y Foden (all from Manchester City). Previously, the same occurred with Ballack in 2008 (Germany, Chelsea) and Griezmann in 2016 (France, Atlético).
*Two players of Italy have won the finals of Champions’ League and Euro at same year: Jorginho and Emerson.
*Luke Shaw (England) has scored the quickest ever goal in the final game of the European Championship: 1 minute 57 seconds. It is also 2nd quickest goal in the finals of major tournaments (after Johan Neeskens in 1974 World Cup, 1 minute 27 seconds).
